An important workshop organized by "Associazione Reti Culturali" in close collaboration with Women Association of Fishermen "Associazione Penelope", regional stakeholders and experts in the maritime sector and marine museum was successfully carried out on September 23rd 2023. The marine anthropologist "Maura Silvagni" gives an overview of Women's role in seafaring society over the decades. The basis of information obtained from interviews with associations of fishermen, seafaring societies and ports, in addition to the results of documentaries and archival research for a time period from 1700 to 1960, highlighted the women's role in the management of seafaring society, in particular in fishing activities closely linked to family activities, household management, as well as in further important tasks complementary to the work of fishermen: mending nets and sails, preparing bait for particular offshore catching techniques, support in coastal fishing with rival networks and fixed positions, sale of the catch, conservation practices for surpluses and unsold fish, sales management. A fundamental role very often lived in the shadows and still not legally recognized in some European countries, such as Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Holland. Biochica as partner of the WINBLUE Project, has taken the opportunity to invite the Associations to become stakeholders of the WINBLUE community, with aim to share important information concerning gender quality, and the state of art of women in the seafaring sector, nowadays.
